Let’s face it; the holidays have a stress component to them, especially if your job is challenging! Running is a stress reliever for me. In my HR experience, October through December is all about open enrollment for benefits, holiday parties, and employee relations. If you are in the accounting field, its fourth quarter and you are gearing up for year-end! Each career has its own ‘end of year’ processes. If you are in sales you are trying to end the year surpassing your sales goals.

Weather?!

The weather doesn’t help stress either. The temperatures are up and down and the days change from rain to snow to sun back to snow then rain, etc. Days get shorter which makes it feel darker. That can make for a very blue Christmas.

New Year!

Welcome, January! The stress should slowly wind down and the days slowly but surely get longer – but the weather? Depending on where you live, the winter blues generally start to set in. If you haven’t done so already, perhaps you are looking for a getaway, planning events, and/or longing for things to look forward too.

This is the time of year when I start planning weekend getaways. They usually involve running. Belonging to several running clubs and run groups is not only a way to get your physical activity in but most importantly have a great group of friends. Many of our running friends plan weekend running getaways and I’m about to tell you about one of our absolute favorites that don’t break the budget as others may.

Amusement Parks?

Do you like amusement parks? Disney is known for their theme race weekends such as Wine and Dine, Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, etc. and they are very popular. However, I am not a Disney fan and honestly, it’s way too expensive for me. I opt for the Run and Ride Series and love it so much that I became a Ride Ambassador. I have attended this race series for the last two years. It is an awesome race series!

Cedar Point

This is the third year I am attending another weekend in Cedar Point, The Roller Coaster Capital of the World for the Run and Ride Race Series on June 8-9, 2019.  This is one of five events throughout the year and in my opinion one of the best race options for your budget. There are 4 races to choose from 1 mile, 5k, Quarter Marathon, and Half Marathon. My favorites are the 5k and Quarter Marathon and 2019 will be my third year participating. Each year more of our running friends attend and it is a blast!

f you register early enough, you can run two races, enjoy the park for three days, t-shirts, finishers’ medals that connect to form a roller coaster and other perks in the park for just over $200 total for two people! As a Ride Ambassador, the earlier you register, the more you save. You get so much for your money and it is so much fun!

  1. I plan out the years vacations also in January, sometimes as early as October. I am not a runner!!! I admire people who are!

  2. You too!? Early January I am always checking the entire schedule seeing what I can get planned for that year. Good luck on your endeavors.

    1. Thank you Georgette. I think I just read that January is a great month to book airfare. I will be driving to Cedar Point but thinking about looking at airfare and going somewhere just because it is inexpensive – then find a run to do!

  3. Good luck to you in all your race endeavors!! I wish this was an avenue for me, but I at least try to walk really fast. The point is getting out there, right? Enjoy!

  4. I absolutely hate running! But as a part of my new years resolutions, I have made it a point to introduce it into my cardio regimen. Great suggestions!

  5. Finisher medals that connect to form a roller coaster sound like a fun set to collect. I am going to look at Google to see if I can find pictures. Cedar Point is on my list of places that I hope to go this year, not to run but to play.

  6. Sounds fun! Not a runner anymore, IT BAND issues that would not quit so biking is my jam now! But great idea!

  7. I have never been a runner. I moved my mom in with me so I could care for her when her health declined and it was pretty stressful. I started to run in the mornings before she woke and it was amazing how good it felt. I haven’t ran since she past. I need to start again.

    1. You should definitely start again – it is relaxing and helps with stress. I am actually injured right now and I am not able to run for a couple of months and it is killing me! I am actually stressed out about how I am going to be able to de-stress. Walking and recumbent biking doesn’t work.

  8. I’ve never heard of these before, but they sound like so much fun! Definitely something to cure the winter blues.

    1. Definitely check it out if you are near the area or in need of a road trip. I believe they have the most roller coasters in the world – many are the
“best in the world” in the first year they operate. The running is an added benefit for me!

  9. Very interesting post! I’m one of those people who wouldn’t run unless a bear were chasing me, but it was still fun to read about.
